SchoolFinder by EdThingsApp is a directory that helps families find and compare schools. This page explains what information we hold, where it comes from, and how you can ask us to change or remove it.
School listing data
Most school profiles on this site were not submitted by the school. They are compiled from public sources — primarily UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus), a public dataset published by India's Ministry of Education under the Government Open Data Licence — India (GODL-India). Its inclusion here does not imply that the Ministry of Education, the school, or any government body endorses SchoolFinder by EdThingsApp or EdThingsApp. Where a school photo, description, or fee range is shown, it has either come from that public source or was added by the school itself after claiming its listing.
This listing-level information (a school's name, address, board affiliation, and similar public facts) generally does not identify a specific individual, so most of it is not "personal data" under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act). If a profile does show a named individual's personal contact details, the rules below for "information you give us" apply to that part of it too.
If you believe a listing is inaccurate, or you represent a school and would like it removed entirely, use the "Something wrong with this listing?" link at the bottom of that school's profile page, or claim the profile to manage it directly.
Information you give us
When you submit an enquiry, claim a profile, leave a review, or report a correction or removal request, we collect what you provide — typically your name, phone number and/or email address, and your message. This is personal data, and the DPDP Act applies to it in full. We use it only to:
- connect a parent's enquiry to the relevant school;
- process a request to claim, correct, or remove a listing;
- tell a school about its profile's engagement, and about EdThingsApp as a product, if you're a school contact.
We do not sell this information. We do not share it with anyone outside EdThingsApp except the specific school your enquiry concerns. We do use a small number of trusted service providers — for example, cloud hosting and email delivery — to run this site; they process data strictly on our behalf, under contract, and never for their own purposes.
Location data
The "Schools near me" feature asks your browser for permission to share your device's location. If you allow it, your coordinates are sent to us only to find and sort nearby schools for that one request — we do not save them against your identity. Like any web request, they may briefly appear in standard technical server logs used for operating the site, not for tracking you individually. You can always browse by city instead without sharing your location.
Usage data
We keep an aggregate view count per school profile to show schools how much interest they're getting. It is not tied to your identity. The compare tool keeps the schools you've picked in your browser's memory for that page only — it is not saved on your device and is never sent to us; picking schools again after a page reload starts fresh.
Children's privacy
This directory is meant for parents, guardians, and school staff. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children through this site, and we do not use any information collected here for behavioural tracking or targeted advertising directed at children.
How long we keep it
Enquiry, correction, and removal-request records are generally kept for up to 24 months from your last contact with us, or until the matter they relate to is resolved, whichever is longer — after that, or sooner if you ask (see below), we delete or anonymise them.
Your rights
Under the DPDP Act and as a matter of policy, you can ask us to:
- Tell you what personal data of yours we hold and how we're using it;
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete personal data;
- Erase personal data we no longer need it for;
- Correct or request removal of a school listing — via that profile's "Something wrong with this listing?" link;
- Nominate someone else to exercise these rights on your behalf in the event of your death or incapacity.
To do any of these, contact us below. We aim to respond within 15 business days. If you're not satisfied with our response, you may also have the right to file a complaint with the Data Protection Board of India.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the information we hold, but no online service can guarantee complete security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page from time to time; the "last updated" date above reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
